20th Century Furniture – The Major Mid-Century Players

Furniture styles from the fifties and the sixties are back in fashion, yesterdays furniture which not so long ago was perceived as old fashioned, is enjoying a majestic return to favour and rightly so for the style and designs are iconic and simply stunning pieces visually to look at.

G- Plan
G PLan FurnitureG- Plan which was lead by Donald Gomme of E Gomme. The company was a long established furniture manufacturer based in High Wycombe which was the mecca for furniture manufacturing. Donald Gomme in the early 1950′s made the then important decision that was to see a furniture revolution, one that was moving away from the austere dark cumbersome designs of pre WW2 to designing the Brandon range which saw the revolutionary beginnings of the mix and match furniture range. With its light airy feel it was remarkable to think that those early designs which Donald hand drew, where to become so very important in the future of furniture design , G-plan set the way where many other manufactures to follow.

Ercol
The name Ercol conjures up elegance , style and luxury. Ercol furniture was unique, it was modern not only in design but Ercol choose in the early 1950′s an “elm” a wood which at the time was not that common and this gave Ercol its modern contemporary look . Ercol founded in 1920 by Lucian Ercolani a young designer, he set up his own furniture business in High Wycombe (where else). It was here that he crafted his art which was to become the Ercol signature trade mark “steam–bending wood ” .

Post second WW2 saw a demand for simpler lines and modern looking furniture. Ercol with its mass produced stylish look found a ready market to buy. For over 100 years Ercol has and still is setting the bench mark for quality stylish furniture for your home

Nathan
Nathan began in a workshop in the Hackney Rd , East London the year was 1916. A young Barnett Nathan, who was of Russian origin began to design and make hand crafted pieces. Over the next 30 years which saw the company go through two world wars, came through these turbulent years strong. It was the second generation and in particular Barnett’s two son’s Jerrold and Clive that are infamous in developing the company and they took G-Plan’s lead by investing heavily in to marketing – advertising was key and through cinema advertising and shop window displays as well has adds in newspapers and shop window displays Nathan achieve country-wide recognition.

Nathan SideboardInternational recognition was gained in 1954 when Nathan’s “Comptons dinning suite ”was chosen to represent the best of British design at a major New York furniture exhibition. This was to take the company from strength to strength.

Nathan specialized in dinning room furniture . Their designs have the principles and flexibilities which have enabled Nathan to be a success- it is a credit to the young Barnett Nathan back in 1916 who had the vision to design outstanding elegant furniture . That vision still remains at the heart of Nathan’s products to this day .
